Opportunities for learning and social justice
Unraveling Ableism is back for a second year in a row on October 19 from 10a to 12pm.
LaVant Consulting, Inc.’s signature program Unraveling Ableism is back for a second year in a row. In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Unraveling Ableism will provide a framework for tackling ableism through three crash courses about disability culture and belonging – free of charge.
Ableism is the discrimination and social prejudice against disabled people. Addressing its effects is an ongoing practice. This year’s Unraveling Ableism program will focus on ableism as it manifests in our language, workplaces, and topical cultural trends.
Unraveling Ableism will feature three crash courses hosted by LCI’s Lead Consultants:
– Watch Your Mouth! Building Trust Through Language
– Beyond the Ramp: Fostering an Equitable Workplace Culture (NEW!)
– How Not to Get Canceled: Disability Community and Culture Trends for 2023 (NEW!)

这 Disability Health & Employment Equity Coalition of Oregon is a group of stakeholders personally invested in the health and prosperity of the disability community.
The coalition will reintroduce SB584 from the 2021 legislative session during next year’s long legislative session. As many of you know, Medicaid and the Americans with Disabilities Act help people with disabilities but also create a cycle of poverty and exclusion that contributes to poor health. Through state-level system and policy changes, we strive to create equity in health and employment so the disability community can thrive and prosper in health and wealth.
Please join by supporting this legislation!
– Share our work with your networks and request their support of this legislation.
– Share your story of how systemic barriers have prevented you from health and prosperity.
– Schedule a visit with your legislators and attend hearings to provide your testimony during the 2023 Legislature Regular Session.
If you have questions, please email info@disabilityequitycoalition.org.
And join the monthly coalition meeting on the 2nd Tuesdays of the month from 4pm-5:30pm.
The Health, Environment, and Leisure (HEAL) Research Lab at Oregon State University (OSU) is inviting adults who are parents or caregivers of children with disability to take part in a research study called Playful Parent.
The purpose of this research study is to develop and evaluate a play intervention program to enhance playfulness for parents of children with disability.
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups to (a) participate in four playfulness training sessions in fall and completed associated assessments OR (b) complete three assessments. All participants will receive compensation for their participation. If you have a child enrolled in one or more OSU programs (e.g., IMPACT, Kid Spirit), then your decision to take part or not take part in this study will not affect your child’s involvement in these programs.
If you would like to participate in this study, please fill out this registration (or copy and paste the link address in the address bar: https://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0B9cILiSd940nqu).

Check out her website and interview with Trevor Noah to learn more about Heumann, who some call the mother of the disability rights community.
